Saxon math is a 'user-friendly' math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to 'sink in' instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. According to its publisher, “Saxon Math is the only major math program on the market today that systematically distributes instruction, practice, and assessment throughout the academic year as opposed to concentrating, or massing, related concepts into a short period of time–usually within a unit or chapter. Saxon Math is a curriculum for students in grades K–12. The amount of new math content students receive each day is limited and students practice concepts every day. New concepts are developed, reviewed, and practiced cumulatively rather than in discrete chapters or units.

Mr. Muir could bring math to life. His excitement about all things math was tangible, inspiring my determination to master each new topic.

I can’t say that I loved geometry, but with the help of my amazing teacher, I made it through and went on to genuinely love Algebra II.

As much as I love math, though, I don’t have the gift to teach it well. I struggle to present new math concepts clearly—my tongue twists and my mind races ahead.

Teaching Math with Online Saxon Math Videos

Nicole the Math Lady has developed an excellent online video curriculum for Saxon Math. With an engaging teaching style and a genuine passion for math, Nicole can spark that enthusiasm that kids need in order to conquer the math mountain.

In each course, Nicole presents all the lessons and investigations in the same order in which they are covered in the Saxon Math textbook.

Each lesson has a lesson video, a “brain break,” and a practice video. Students first watch the lesson videos to learn the new concept; then, after a quick “brain break,” they do the practice problems to apply what they’ve learned.

What We Love About Nicole the Math Lady

1. Videos are available online.

I’m a huge fan of keeping homeschool portable (car-schooling, anyone?), and lugging a laptop and DVD around is most certainly NOT portable in my book. These Saxon Math videos are available online and are accessible via mobile devices as well as computers.

My teen son, Collin, loves the idea of being able to watch his math lessons on his iPod! Super convenient!

2. Lessons are brief.

We have used other Saxon Math video lessons that were incredibly time-consuming. My teens and tweens dreaded math every day, in part because it took so long to complete.

With Nicole the Math Lady, lessons are divided into topics, with each topic getting its own short, to-the-point video.

Each lesson video is around 3-7 minutes long; practice videos are typically 5-10 minutes long. Algebra I and II videos are sometimes a little longer. Bite-sized lessons for the win!

3. Learning is fun!

Yes, I DID say fun! Nicole didn’t earn her title of “Math Lady” with boring, monotone lectures. (Yep, we’ve had those before.)

If other Saxon Math videos could be considered a math encyclopedia, then Nicole the Math Lady would be the “living book” of math. Her use of “NICOLEisms”—mnemonic devices, silly songs, and other strategies—helps make math both memorable and fun.
